Statement
Over protected by my Indian culture of staying inside the house, I got freedom through reading and meditating. I grew up reading books like Secret Seven and Famous Five by Enid Blyton and whenever I read them I was creating images in my mind engaging in the activities described in the books. Safe in the house on my bed with the book, my thoughts would roam in the woods and places, and I would be free from physical bonding. This was the only way to forget about the unconditional family issues I was going through. I always dreamt that I would be a free spirit and not this body, and I kept up with my education all the time, for true freedom was to become someone.
I have a very special connection and bonding with my 12 year old niece Saniha, seeing her grow I see myself, her innocence and questions about life makes me feel like going through childhood again. As a child she is a free spirit and I always tell her that if she wants to succeed in life, she needs to get good education and read books, which will open the doors to good knowledge and wisdom. Our body keeps us bound and shackled to situations and customs, but good education brings true beauty. In my work she is modeling as a free spirit and her anklet or jewels are not customary bindings, but her inner beauty. Her white dress is peace, the red walls are made with love to keep us protected and she is outside the darkness of unconditional situations.
Culturally, bright colors are considered to be of festivity and white is of purity and peace, for blue is infinity. I feel that women in our culture are dressed up like dolls and princesses but treated like insignificant slaves. Each fold in the fabric holds different moments of life moving by the wind of emotions, and the warmth of the sun is felt, like being in a state of tranquility.
We as females can be bound by culture, shackled in the sake of family’s name, freedom is lost by the body, but spirit and thoughts are boundless and fully decorated like a royalty through good knowledge and education.
